This month’s edition:
The Dangers of Hidden Trans Fats

A recently released study by the National Academy of Sciences further confirms the known health hazards of consuming foods containing “trans fats.” Trans fats are found in a variety of processed foods, including margarine, pastries, cookies, crackers, bread, salad dressings, condiments, candy, ice cream, breakfast cereals, chips, and deep-fried foods. Trans fats can frequently be identified on food ingredient labels as “hydrogenated,” “partially hydrogenated,” or “fractionated.” Trans fats are linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and other health disorders.

The FDA is expected to finalize labeling regulations requiring that trans fats be separately declared in grams per serving in the Nutrition Facts or Supplement Facts box on food labels. It’s about time! The health hazards of trans fats were reported by scientist, Udo Erasmus, in his book, Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill, published 15 years ago! Over 30 years ago, Dr. Pavlo Airola wrote books warning about the health hazards of processed fats and how lack of proper food storage practices encourages rancidity to spoil the healthy fats that nature put in fresh nuts, seeds, grains and pressed oils.

It generally takes 15-30 years for government bureaucracies to properly warn the public about health hazards. Remember asbestos? Cigarettes? Pesticides? The public is learning the hard way to depend more on progressive nutritionists, scientists and consumer advocacy groups to be advised regarding health safety issues in a timely manner.

Editor’s note:
As a Integrative Medicine Practioner I have been routinely requiring that all of my new telephone clients send me photocopies of the labels of all the vitamins and nutritional supplements they are using. If they are consulting with me in person I ask them to bring all their supplements in a bag. I frequently discover trans fats listed in the “other ingredients” paragraph on the product label. Trans fats in your vitamins?!? Yep. I also frequently find lots of other junk added to nutritional supplements. Find out more about this subject in next month’s edition of Health and Healing News: “Are Your Supplements Safe?”
